Hidden Figures: Movie Screening with Commentary Online

Join us for a live streaming and virtual discussion of the movie Hidden Figures, honoring Black History Month and International Day of Women and Girls in Science.  

This screening is Co-Sponsored by the College of Engineering DEI Council.

The movies will be streamed over Zoom and University of Iowa Faculty and Students will provide expert commentary through the movie (good and bad).   Everyone is invited to attend, and the audience will be able to ask questions throughout as well.

Hidden Figures (2016)

A 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder. It is loosely based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly about African American female mathematicians who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Space Race. The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and other missions. The film also features Octavia Spencer as NASA supervisor and mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as NASA engineer Mary Jackson, with Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Mahershala Ali, Aldis Hodge and Glen Powell in supporting roles.

Expert Commentators: Dr. Cynthia Farthing (Mathematics), Dr. Marge Murray (Rhetoric & Mathematics), Safeya Siddig, and Adeline Barron.
